McKinney-Vento (Homeless) Services

Lakeland School System offers support to students experiencing homelessness through its Homeless Education Program. This program is guided by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, specifically Title IX, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). The McKinney-Vento Act defines "homeless" as lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.

Students experiencing homelessness may be living in transitional housing, in a motel, in a shelter, in someone else’s house or apartment due to loss of housing (eviction, home foreclosure, etc.), moving from place to place, living in a car, campsite, or other location, or in a residence with inadequate facilities (lack of electricity, water, heat, etc.).
