Dr. Ted Horrell
Dr. Ted Horrell was named the first superintendent of the Lakeland School System in December of 2013 and was named the 2022 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year by the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents. During his tenure, LSS has been recognized as an Exemplary School District by the Tennessee Department of Education in four of its six years of eligibility ranking among the highest performing districts in the state of Tennessee. Dr. Horrell supervised the construction and opening of Lakeland’s second school, the 5-8 Lakeland Preparatory School, which opened in August of 2017. The school was awarded the Tennessee School Boards Association “School of the Year” award for 2017. Since then, Dr. Horrell has also supervised the construction of a twelve classroom addition at Lakeland Elementary, and the construction of a high school wing at Lakeland Preparatory to serve grades 9-12. Dr. Horrell was named the 2019 “Person of the Year” by the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce.
Prior to accepting the position in Lakeland, Dr. Horrell served as principal of Germantown High School for two and a half years. During his tenure there, GHS was named one of America’s Best High Schools by Newsweek magazine for the first time in the school’s history. GHS also was recognized as the first exemplary model in the state of Tennessee of successful Professional Learning Communities. Dr. Horrell came to Germantown after serving for three years as principal of Millington Central High School. He is a 1992 graduate of Germantown High School and taught at the school from 2000 to 2006. Dr. Horrell received his undergraduate degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri. He went on to receive both his master’s degree in Leadership and Policy Studies, and his Doctor of Education degree from the University of Memphis. His doctoral dissertation focused on social learning in multi-age classrooms. Dr. Horrell enjoys spending time with his wife, Sarah, and his sons Fletcher and Archer. He is an avid Grizzlies fan, and also enjoys playing the guitar and writing songs.
